International drivers license
and rental cars
International Driving Permit
Apparently, when I asked around about
the nesessity of getting an international driver's license for Americans traveling in Europe, the consensus seemed to be that most European rental companies won't ask for one, but if you ever got a ticket for anything, then the police could fine you for not having one. Yikes!
So, they are only about $15.00 to get at a place
like AAA, if you bring your own photos -
which you can easily get at your local
pharmacy. If you have AAA take the photos,
it's an additional cost of about $8.00..
It's basically a little white pamphlet,
that is valid for one year...the one above
is mine that I recently purchased at AAA, that has your content in many different languages...

Rental Cars
As for rental cars, it seems as though one of
the best ways to go about reserving one,
is also through a place like AAA.
This way if anything happens, they can assist you,
where it may be challenging otherwise,
to take care of any mishap in the local language,
or their limited English...
Plus, the price seems to be basically the same...
As for car rental insurance, AAA told me that just about
all car insurance policies in the USA won't pick up
insurance on a European car rental.
They advised it was best to purchase it with
the rental car company,
which they can handle for you...
